I'm considering purchasing a 77 620 with a stock 4sp. I've read the past forum discussions regarding trading up to a 5sp and/or changing the rear end gearing. If I change the rear end gearing while retaing my 4sp will I gain much? What is the recommended gearing replacement? Is changing the rear end gearing a major operation, or can my mechanic swap out the gears without having to remove the existing stock axil? Can I simply purchase the gears or do I have to purchase a complete used axil? Is it easier for my mechanic to swap out a complete rear axil? If yes, is there a axil/gear combination that is a bolt-in operation?
